What is an Elopement? (And What It’s Not) is a question that comes up often, especially as more couples move away from traditional wedding structures. An elopement is not just running away or skipping a big wedding. It’s a fully intentional way of getting married that prioritizes presence, experience, and connection over obligation or performance. At its core, it is about choosing how the day feels rather than how it is expected to look. For many couples, it becomes a way to strip away noise and focus on what actually matters to them. It is not less meaningful than a traditional wedding, it is simply shaped differently.
An Intentional Experience
Elopements are built around intention, not avoidance. The decision is rarely about escaping a wedding, but instead about designing a day that feels aligned with the couple’s relationship. That might mean choosing a quiet place in the mountains, a coastal overlook, or a cabin tucked into the woods. It also means slowing the pace of the day so there is space to actually experienceit. Nothing is rushed or overly structured in a way that pulls couples out of their own moment. The focus shifts from performing a wedding to living it fully.
A Full Elopement Day
A full elopement day often feels more like a shared experience than a scheduled event. It might start slowly with getting ready in a quiet space, coffee on the counter, and light moving through the windows. From there, the day can unfold naturally with a first look in a private location, time spent exploring nearby landscapes, or simply sitting together without interruption. The ceremony itself is usually simple and deeply personal, often just the couple or a very small group of people. Afterward, the rest of the day might include a slow drive, a picnic, a private dinner, or wandering somewhere meaningful without a set agenda. The structure is flexible enough to allow real moments to happen without forcing them.
My Role In Planning And Supporting
Part of my work is helping couples shape a timeline that supports the kind of experience they want. Instead of building a rigid schedule, the goal is to create a flow that allows space for both movement and stillness. I help balance light, location, travel time, and emotional pacing so the day does not feel rushed or fragmented. This often includes suggesting when to slow down, when to move, and when to simply stay in a moment longer. I also help with vendor recommendations when needed, especially for florals, hair and makeup, or private chefs, depending on the type of experience the couple wants to create. The goal is always to support the day without overwhelming it.
What Location Scouting Means And Why It Matters
Location scouting is a key part of how elopements come together. It is the process of finding spaces that not only look beautiful but also feel right for the experience a couple wants to have. This includes understanding light, accessibility, privacy, and how a location changes throughout the day. I often scout locations ahead of time or research areas extensively so couples do not have to stress about finding the perfect spot themselves. It also helps ensure that the flow of the day feels natural, with locations that connect easily rather than creating unnecessary travel or interruption. A good location becomes part of the story rather than just a backdrop.
How Elopements Can Be Fully Customized
One of the most important parts of elopements is that they are completely customizable. There is no set formula or required structure, which means every couple can design a day that reflects them. Some choose to include hiking or adventure elements, while others prefer staying in one place and focusing on quiet, intentional moments. Some include family, while others keep it just between the two of them. Everything from timing to location to activities can be shaped around what feels meaningful. What matters most is that the day reflects the couple, not a template. That flexibility is what makes elopements so personal, and why no two ever feel the same.
What is an Elopement? (And What It’s Not) is ultimately about choice. It is about stepping into a wedding day that feels intentional, present, and entirely your own, instead of one that follows expectations that were never yours to begin with.
“Let me share a story of how Daisy saved my plan and why she is the best.
I have never been to Leavenworth, but I really want to propose to my girlfriend at Colchuck Lake. Daisy has not been there either, but she drove for 3 hours and did a 4-mile hike just so she could find a perfect spot. Keep in mind that this hike is 2 miles straight and 2 miles going up in elevation, which is pretty challenging for a non-hiker like myself. Also, at the time, there was an ongoing search for a wanted murderer on the run in the woods, and I kept insisting to her that we would change the plan and find another location. BUT Daisy still insisted and did the hike 3 weeks before the proposal. On the day of, she hiked 3 hours before we got there and had everything set up for us.
Truthfully, I can’t thank Daisy enough for all of her hard work and dedication.”
We did family photos with our extended family (my parents, my brother and his wife, and my husband and our 4 kiddos). She made the session so positive, capturing both the bigger family unit as a whole while also getting individual family/couples photos. I cannot recommend her enough. Will absolutely be utilizing her for all family photos moving forward
